Paired Remote Volunteer Assignments
Since 1985, the Farmer-to-Farmer program has sent volunteers around the world to provide critical technical assistance to private farmers, cooperatives, community groups, credit institutions, extension services, input supply firms, agribusinesses, and others. During the COVID-19 pandemic, international travel halted, yet Farmer-to-Farmer was able to quickly pivot to a new model where U.S. volunteers worked remotely in partnership with local volunteers in Farmer-to-Farmer countries. Together, these volunteer pairs have continued the successes of Farmer-to-Farmer by promoting sustainable improvements in food security, agricultural production, processing, and marketing. Farmer-to-Farmer volunteers are now back to traveling in many parts of the world, but the paired model has proved to be an effective tool with many lessons for future volunteers.
