FIELD CROP PRODUCTION; crops that are grown for their edible seeds like sunflower, sesame and rice, and animals feed such as corn, soybeans, hay, including cover crops such as wheat, rye, buckwheat, barley, amaranth, millet, fonio, kamut, teft and coffee.
HORTICULTURE; the branch of agriculture concerned with growing plants that are used by people for food, for medicinal purposes, and for aesthetic gratification. All fruits, vegetables, and flowers grown underground, above ground, and come from trees.
LIVESTOCK, FISHERIES, AND POULTRY; domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities such as food, fiber, and labor. It includes the controlled cultivation, management, and production, including improvement of the qualities considered desirable by humans by means of breeding.
NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT; the management of natural resources such as land, water, soil, plants and animals, with a particular focus on how management affects the quality of life for both present and future generations (stewardship).
NUTRITION; the assimilation by all living organisms of food materials that enable them to grow, maintain themselves, and reproduce.
FOOD SAFETY; a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent foodborne illness. This includes a number of routines that should be followed to avoid potentially severe health hazards.
AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION & RESEARCH; the teaching of agriculture, natural resources, and land management through classroom, laboratory and hands on experience to control diseases and pests, create better cultivars, increase productivity in the fields or animal rearing facilities, improve food crops, and the basic biological understanding of plants and animals.
AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY; technology to produce machines used on a farm to help with farming. This definition has been expanded to include modern technology that supports the Business of Farming.
F2F PROGRAM SUPPORT; the process of managing several related projects, often with the intention of improving an organization’s performance.
